Presenting in person back in 2018...wow I miss in-person conferences.

Background
"Not a Guinea Pig: Building Trust Through Research Ethics" was a 40 minute presentation and 20 minute activity about how to get more in-depth research insights by emphasizing the research participant's agency and putting research ethics at the forefront of the engagement. While doing surface-level research (sometimes called UX theater) is possible without participatory design methods, building trust is crucial for uncovering deeper needs.
The basis of this talk was my experiences doing research on potentially sensitive topics in government and healthcare. Through experience (often trial and error of getting it wrong the first time) I learned how to get better results through simple, actionable changes in what I said in the introduction of the interview and how I structured the overall engagement.
I first developed the idea for the DC UX Research Meetup group. I continued to workshop it at other small groups, then presented the final version of this talk at the 2018 UXPA conference in Washington DC.
